Wouter Weylandt dies following a crash in Giro

Another cycling tragedy.  There is no possibility that this list is complete but it will remind you of the dangers of our beloved sport.

1935: Francisco Capeda (Spa), after falling into a ravine in Bourg d’Oisans in Tour de France

1937: Andre Raynaud (Fra), Motor pacing world champion, during a track race in Antwerp

1950: Camille Danguillaume (Fra), hit by a motorcycle during the French road championship in Monthlery

1951: Serse Coppi (Ita) Fausto Coppi’s brother, after a crash in the Tour of Piedmont

1956: Stan Ockers (Bel), world champion on the road, during a track race in Antwerp

1967: Tom Simpson (GBR), world champion on the road during the Tour de France, a victim of coronary artery rupture on the Mont Ventoux, due to heat and doping

1969: José Samyn (Fra), after colliding with a programme vendor at a kermesse in the East Flanders town of Zingem

1970: Jean-Pierre Monseré (Bel), world champion on the road after a collision with a car at a kermesse near Antwerp

1972: Manuel Galera (Spa), after a crash in the Tour of Andalucia

1976: Juan-Manuel Santisteban (Spa), with a fall in the first stage of Tour of Italy

1984: Joaquim Agostinho (Por), after a fall on colliding with a dog during the Tour of Algarve

1986: Emilio Ravasio (Ita), after a fall in the first stage of the Tour of Italy

1987: Vicente Mata (Spa), after a collision with a car during Grand Prix Luis Puig in Valencia

1987: Michel Goffin (Bel), after a fall at Grand Prix Haut-Var

1992: Amateur rider Danny Allaerts (Bel) after a crash in Haacht

1993: Cyclo cross rider Geert De Vlaeminck (Bel) dies of a heart attack in a cross in Heist-op-den-Berg; Philippe Marchix (Fra), after falling during Tour de Eure (Fra) for amateurs; Fabio Casartelli (Ita), fall on the descent of the Portet d’Aspet

1996: Jose Antonio Espinosa (Spa), team time trial in crash during test in Fuenlabrada

1997: Armin Hegglin (Swi) crashes into a tree during a stage in the Tour of the Jura

1998: Björn Stevensen (Nor), after a fall during a road race in Trondheim

1999: Manuel Sanroma (Spa), fall during the second stage of the Tour of Catalonia

2000: Saul Morales (SPA) during the seventh stage of Tour of Argentina was hit by a truck

2003: Andrei Kivilev (Kaz) succumbs to the hospital in Saint-Etienne day after a fall in the second stage of Paris-Nice

2004: Tim Pauwels dies of a broken blood vessel in a cyclo-cross race in the East Flanders Erpe-Mere

2005: Alessio Galletti (Ita) dies of coronary artery rupture during climbing in the Spanish race Subida al Naranco

2006: Isaac Galvez (Spa) is heavy fall in the Six Days of Ghent, dies on way to hospital

2011: Wouter Weylandt (Bel) dies following a fall during a descent in the third stage of the Giro.
