Boonen must wait until lunchtime Friday

The Court of Arbitration for Sport of the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF) today in Paris considered the case of Tom Boonen. Tommeke, who arrived in Nice on Wednesday, must wait until Friday around noon to learn whether or not he can start in the 96th Tour de France. “After all heard, we consider our verdict,” says the CNOSF. “This verdict will be notified Friday during the day only to the interested parties. To protect the confidentiality of the discussions not to harm themselves, we will not comment further.”

Jean-Louis Dupont, Quick.Step lawyer, was satisfied that the matter was treated seriously. “The session was more than five hours,” said Dupont. “On Friday around 12 pm there will be the decision. What will be, I can’t predict. There will be a winner and a loser, and both will have to accept the decision.”

If Boonen gets the nod it should intensify the battle for the green jersey.  He is unlikely to get the better of Cavendish on the “easier” stages but like Freire the big Belgian champion can hang in when the going is a little tougher. When he took the rainbow jersey at Madrid the pure sprinters like McEwen and Petacchi were distanced in the testing finale. The same fate may await the Manxman.

If Tommeke doesn’t start his place will be taken by Allan Davies.
