Tragic death of Frederiek Nolf

The young Belgian pro cyclist Frederiek Nolf (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) last night died in his sleep. The 21-year-old was in Qatar where his team was participating in the Tour of Qatar (2.1). Today’s fifth stage has been neutralized and Topsport Vlaanderen has left the race. Director Walter Planckaert also withdrew the Topsport  development team from the Etoile de Besseges in France. “We feel disbelief and incomprehension said Planckaert. We will remember Frederiek Nolf as a sweet mannered, brave and talented boy. Planckaert said that Nolf’s recent medical tests had shown excellent outcomes.

Nolf was starting his third season as a professional cyclist. The Kuurne rider  was looking forward to competing in many of the Belgian spring classics. Nolf was last season thirteenth in the Tour de Vendée. He excelled as a junior winning the junior GP Bernaudeau, the Tour du Valromey and the Route de l’Avenir.

“We are totally distraught by this news,” said team manager Christophe Sercu. “Last night there was absolutely nothing wrong. Frederiek had dinner with his team-mates and went to bed at about 10pm.  Apparently, Frederiek died in his sleep. His roommate Kristof Goddaert had noticed nothing. “
