Lists, are they worthwhile?

Do you ever watch “Best of” shows on the tele? I am ashamed to admit that I do although they usually fairly mindless. Lists of Best Ever bike racers at least purport to be objective and for me the best was produced by Daniel Marszalek and could be found on Cycling4all until the site was shut down. This list awards points on the basis of the value of the race at the time. For example a race like Paris-Brussels was a classic for sixty years and is now a chipper, and this is allowed for. I have shamelessly stolen the top twelve categorisation of one-day riders, which in my opinion is spot on.

Top twelve one day riders

Eddy Merckx (Bel)

Roger De Vlaeminck (Bel)

Rik Van Looy (Bel)

Sean Kelly (Irl)

Francesco Moser (Ita)

Johan Museeuw (Bel)

Walter Godefroot (Bel)

Herman Van Springel (Bel)

Jan Raas (Ned)

Michele Bartoli (Ita)

Bernard Hinault (Fra)

Fausto Coppi (Ita)
